restar ( reh-stahr' )

verb ( to subtract, to deduct; to minimize, to play down )

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. El presidente le restó importancia a las protestas en las provincias, diciendo que eran las acciones de sólo unos pocos alborotadores.

The president downplayed the protests in the provinces, saying they were the actions of just a few troublemakers.

2. Tan malo soy con las matemáticas que ni me da confianza restar sin acudir a una calculadora.

I'm so bad at math that I'm not even confident enough to subtract without using a calculator.

Restar cifras es mucho más fácil que restar quitar peso.

Subtracting numbers is much easier than subtracting weight.

"Restar cifras es mucho más fácil que quitar peso." -- "Restar peso" does not sound right. It might depend where you live, but I haven't heard that before. But, I agree. It gets harder the older we get! - 00e46f15, Oct 19, 2013
Thanks Susy. I was afraid it might not work here, but realized, even if it was wrong, at least I'd know the RiGHT way afterwards. Thanks for filling me in. - rogspax, Oct 20, 2013

Enseñar a restar a mi hijo no ha sido tan fácil como pensé. Mi hijo no heredó mi gusto por las matemáticas. Especialmente de cálculo y geometría analítica!

Teaching my son how to subtract hasn't been as easy as I thought. My son didn't inherit my love for Math. I especially loved Calculus and Analytical Geometry.

Please help me with my English!

Almost perfect Susy. This is one of those rare times when even we English eSpeakers prefer the E in front of the S. Entonces, Especially.. - rogspax, Oct 19, 2013
Thank you! - 00e46f15, Oct 19, 2013
De nada amiga. Tuve que leerlo como en tres veces para darme cuenta que era solo 99% perfecto. I really envy your ability. - rogspax, Oct 19, 2013
Your English is always very good! - rac1, Oct 19, 2013
Your English is next to perfect. I love figures also , I am always looking at them. - ray76, Oct 19, 2013
My problem is that I am rarely sure of English. Lack of confidence, I guess... Thank you for your kind words, friends. - 00e46f15, Oct 19, 2013
You've earned the words Susy. Ray, I'm sure you do. Keep on keepin' on. - rogspax, Oct 20, 2013

Some say her sister's dress detracted from the bride's dress.

Algunos dicen que el vestido de su hermana le restó méritos al traje de novia.

I saw this phrase in the SD dictionary - detracted from someone/something = to subract merits from.... thought I'd be daring on this one, Annie. ha. - katydew, Oct 19, 2013
"Algunos dicen que el vestido de su hermana le restó méritos al traje de novia." -- "Algunas" if you are sure that all of them were female. Vas muy bien, Katy! - 00e46f15, Oct 19, 2013

Hay que aprender sumar y restar antes de llegar a la poesía de las matemáticas.

You have to learn to add and subtract before you can get to the poetry of mathematics.

Con las operaciones básicas de matemáticas puedes sumar, restar, multiplicar o dividir.

With basic mathematical operations you can add, subtract, multiply or divide.

La vida de los jubilados sigue más dificultándose más y más. Ahora hay más cargos e impuestos que nunca, restándoles sus ahorros. Es un verdadero robo.

The life ot the pensioners is getting harder every day, there are more fees and taxes diminishing their savings than ever before. It's sheer robbery.

Si usted me resta todo mis puntos buenos ,lejos de mi , hay muchos más puntos malos.

Supongo que soy una mala persona.

If you subtract my good points away from me , there are many more bad points ,

I guess I am a bad guy.

Si a alguien le restas su pelo oscuro, sus ojos azules, los rasgos afilados, el cuerpo sensual y en total una presencia tan carismática ¿qué quedará para recordarlo? ¡Una mordedura en su cuello!

If one were to subtract his dark hair, his blue eyes, the sharp features, the sensuous body, in total a presence so charismatic what would one be left to remember him? A bite on one's neck!

Las garras huesudas del gobierno restan los impuestos de tu sueldo.

Noetol, I would change "sus" and "su", because it looks as if you are talking about the bony claws of the government are the ones that are deducting the taxes from their paychecks. So, how about: "Las garras huesudas del gobierno restan (te quitan)... - 00e46f15, Oct 19, 2013
... los impuestos de tu sueldo." "... te quitan" se oye todavía más doloroso! I wish there was a third independent party! Saludos! - 00e46f15, Oct 19, 2013

Desafortunadamente tenemos un nuevo gobierno que quiere restar el problema de cambio de clima. Su política es continuar exportar más carbón sin pensando en las consecuencias.

Unfortunately we have a new government which wants to downplay the problem of climate change. Their policy is to continue to export more coal without thinking about the consequences.
