Porque el pelo crece en la cabeza. Red (roja) + head (cabeza)

In Mexico they are called peluquería as well.

Hi Chileno. you asked if they say "me voy a cortar el pelo"? Maybe some people do, but you "cortar el cabello" in a peluquería. Strange, uh?

gringo and rogs:

Since both of you seem to be living in Mexico, please check if people say.

"me voy a cortar el pelo"

We, as Chileans, know about "cabello" but we use "pelo" for everything unless for women body, except pubic, we use "vello" which is for "fuzz" really, else it is also pelo.

Actually, I have just visited, so I would bow to Gringo´s advice. But, I´m fairly certain I´ve heard that phrase in neighboring Texas. - rogspax, Oct 16, 2013
I agree Chileno, without venturing out to Brasil.. - annierats, Oct 16, 2013
Thanks Chileno "vello" is a new word to me. - gringojrf, Oct 16, 2013

I had a haircut in Spain, I went to the ' peloquería' , of course. They did not offer to do anything to my pubic hair.. Indeed, it did not occur to me to go there for Brasilian.. I am behind the times, clearly.

pelirrojo = redheaded

Sí, eso!

This is interesting to me as in Mexico the word "pelo" is used in humans for all hair other than head hair which is referred to a "cabello", yet pelirrojo is used.

I learned the pelo vs cabello distinction while down there and was surprised. The youngest son of the family I stayed with had a good laugh.

But turnabout came quickly. They were trying to explain that pelo might be arms or legs or... Public (in English). I then had to explain that they were looking for the work pubic, and that under normal circumstances, pubic and public were pretty much opposites. The little one thought this was hilarious too. An age thing, I suppose.
