Alacena vs. armario vs. ropero vs. despensa

I was trying to learn some spanish for words used “around the house”, names of rooms, furnitures, objects, appliances, etc. and came across these three different words for the “cupboard”. I am thoroughly confused here and seek help from a native speaker.

Do all these words (alacena, armario, ropero, and despensa) mean exactly the same thing (the cupboard)? Or are there any subtle differences? And if they mean the same thing, do they have any region-specific usage preferences? Which word is used in which country? Which word would you be more likely to use when talking about the attic?

Thanks for your help!
