sueter vs. saco

Question

Recently I was told it was improper to use suéter and that the proper word for sweater is sáco. Whenever I look up the word for sweater, I find suéter. Can anyone tell me if there is any truth behind what I've been told.

Well it is actually el suéter. The accent is an essential part of Spanish spelling. I find using the US International keyboard a very good way to type the accents. The Microsoft link will give you information on this keyboard. It might be regional but, in my Spanish classes we learned suéter and those classes were taught by native Spanish speakers, one from Colombia and one from Costa Rica. Buena suerte.

In any event:

In some countries saco = jacket

in other words:

jacket = chaqueta, vestón saco.

Sweater = suéter, jersey, chaleco de lana, chomba de lana.

Hi there.

• Sweater = Suéter. That's undeniable. But in every region other words might be used.

Where I live (Spain), for example, if you say suéter everybody should understand but it's not the most common word to use. Jersey is far more common. Or even sudadera (sports sweater, often hooded).

If in your region (or where the person who told you that lives) the word "saco" is more used, it's okay. You know the saying: When in Rome...
