hacer/preparar la tarea

What is the difference between hacer la tarea and preparar la tarea? My spanish textbook uses both.

Is it possible to use preparar in place of hacer when referencing homework? Or, is tarea being used to mean something else than homework when used with preparar?

It seems to me that preparar is to prepare for something rather than do or make so in the case of doing homework I would say hacer. However, bear in mind that I am not a native and learning just like you.
