catalán ( kah-tah-lahn' )

(adjective) Catalan

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Las ciudades catalanas más conocidas por el tourismo son Barcelona, Figueres, Tarragona, Girona, and Sitges.

También hay una pista de carreras muy famosa, Circuit de Catalunya.

The Catalan cities most known for tourism are Barcelona, Figueres, Tarragona, Girona, and Sitges.

There is also a very famous racetrack, The Circuit of Catalonia.

(Also these days, even in the English speaking racing world, it is better known simply as Catalunya, and note also, that in Catalan, it is Circuit, not Circuito as in Spanish, which I tend to forget and write incorrectly ' as do a good number of English speaking motor journalists.)

Cuando famoso arquitecto catalán Antoni Gaudi fue atropellado por un tranvía nadie lo reconoció. Todos pensaban que él era un mendigo a causa de sus ropas andrajosas. Los taxistas no querían llevarlo al hospital porque creían que él no tenía suficiente dinero para pagarles.

When the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi was struck by a tram nobody recognized him. Because of his shabby clothes everyone thought that he was a beggar. Taxi drivers didn't want to take him to the hospital because they believed that he didn't have enough money to pay them.

I accidentally found an interesting famous person of Catalán descent, Admiral David G. Farragut, best know for his statement "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" at the battle of Mobile Bay during the civil war in 1864, his father was a native of Minorca, Spain, a Catalán in U.S. Naval history.

"Tengo algunas dificultades entendiendo algunos Catalanes, especialmente los señores mayores sin dientes."

I have some difficulties understanding some Catalans, especially the elderly gentlemen without teeth.

"Pero mi abuela era Gallega y también tuve problemas entenderla cuando ella no usaba la dentadura.Tal vez era los dientes y no el Catalon dialecto ? "

But my grandmother was Gallega and I also had problems understanding her when she didn't wear her dentures. Perhaps it was the teeth and not the Catalonian dialect ?
