Read these, they'll get you off to a good start.
And there's:
¿Cómo te va?
¿Qué tal?
¿Qué hay [de nuevo]?
¿Qué me cuentas?
Much more slangy Mexican expressions:
¿Qué tranza?
¿Qué show?
Those are probably for the very young, but you may hear them or decide to use them yourself.
que dice? que pedo? que traes? hola. como estas. que hubo. que pasa, que paso, que onda
Que lo que is another one, probably only recognized by Dominicans.
Cómo estás is very textbook, but also very common. Ditto Hola. I.e. there is no disconnect between formal and common, in this case.

What works or sounds best will depend on both your style, and which region or area of Spanish speakers you are dealing with.
