Encontré este gráfico en la Internet. La sonrisa es muy grande y expresa alegría. I found this graphic on the Internet. The smile is very big and expresses joy.
Ayer, tenía el ceño fruncido, hoy él está sonriendo. Yesterday, he was frowning, today he is smiling.
The use of "ser" and "estar" is a difficult concept to master. I am still learning. "Ser" is used to convey that "joy" is a part of a person's character.
"Estar" is used because one day he's frowning and another day he's smiling. Rather than joy being a part of his character, it is based on a condition, how he feels at the time.
