If I lived downtown, I could walk to the theater instead of driving.

In the Midwest of the United States people don't go downtown like they used to.

I saw the smallest fireworks display in the world in downtown San Pedro, Belize. Only one rocket was ignited and it was so damp, it rose only 10 feet in the air.

I think that the word "downtown" is an American word, which is not used in Britain or Australia. Sometimes we might hear it because many "Americanisms" have entered our language. We usually say "go into the city" or "go into the city centre".

You are right mate , we may say ," we are going down to town " if we live away from the City . - ray76, Oct 6, 2013
In small towns we will say we have to go into town. It could be two hours away by car. When I lived in Houston, downtown was the area where the skyscrapers were. - 0083f5dc, Oct 6, 2013
Right Annie - in London we say "I'm going up west" = to have fun or maybe to shop if that is the same thing for some people. - ian-hill, Oct 6, 2013
I was going to write this one! Here in the UK, we say the 'city centre' or the 'town centre' or the CBD (central business district) depending on the context. In Stoke, they say "I'm going oop 'anly" (Hanly is the city centre) - togtog, Oct 6, 2013

The disadvantage of downtown is the fact that is too noisy.
