Welcome to the forum. I have been a beginner in Spanish for several years and you are probably not real advanced in the language either (if you completed your profile we would know) but gender of nouns is not the most difficult thing about Spanish. Below is a link to a quick lesson on gender. Look at Part II of that subject also. Here is a short excerpt from those lessons that governs the gender of many nouns, "Nouns that end in -sión, -ción, -dad, -tad, -tud, -umbre are feminine." Most nouns that end in -a are also feminine but there are a lot of exceptions (this is covered in the lessons). In some cases that is just the way it is and in others there are logical reasons such as foto which is feminine because it is a shortened form of la fotographía. Buena suerte.

Universidad is fem. While you are reading this, learn two more words:

Day (el día) is masc; night (la noche) is fem. Enjoy learning!
