Elk vs Moose

My dictionary says "elk" is "alce" in Spanish. It also says "moose" is "alce." Now, a moose and an elk might be distantly related, but they are clearly NOT the same animal! Help, please! I don't understand...

But though from the same family, a Deer or Venado, is very different from an Elk or Moose (which are at least close to each other) - rogspax, Sep 29, 2013

It appears to be an etymological mix up. According to this article in Wikipedia, 'elk' (from the Latin 'alces') is the common European name for moose.

Thank you, Kirk. I read your link and I'm still confused, but now I'm confused on a higher level! Lol And it appears that the confusion started many years ago... - Kerstin125, Sep 28, 2013
