I'm translating an article and I'm not sure how to translate:

"Se trataba pues de impedir" esa partenogenesis espontanea seguida rapidamente de una fragmentacion.

I know the rest of the sentence, just the phrase in quotes is what I don't know. Help!

In many contexts 'pues' can also come across in English as any vague, pausing, weakly contrasting word; not just 'well'. I'd be a little liberal with this one and do something like the following:

"It has to do, then, with preventing..."

The pues is just an interjection, like "well." Tratarse de means to be about, as in "El libro se trata de la esclavitud" (The book is about/deals with slavery).

So, "Se trataba pues de impedir" means "It has to do with, well, preventing/impeding..."
