reparar ( reh-pah-rahr' )

verb ( to repair, to restore )

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game to help with using a new vocabulary word! Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Ray, Ray, don't say you won't wake up....jeje - rac1, Sep 13, 2013
That is something to wonder about. - katydew, Sep 13, 2013
Indeed, and I wonder IF I will think when I do not awake (truth be told, I´m not sure I always do even now) - rogspax, Sep 13, 2013

What has never been reported is that during ww2 there was so much oil leaked all around the world because of the ships that they all sunk , it was horrendous but kept hidden. and was never cleaned up. - ray76, Sep 13, 2013
I don't want to start an argument but the oil rig was run- managed by American companies. - ian-hill, Sep 13, 2013
I don't doubt that, Ian. :) - rac1, Sep 13, 2013
And I don´t doubt that the buck stops at the Top! (not that I want to continue and argument) - rogspax, Sep 13, 2013
No argument from me. Haliburton was a subcontractor and BP is claiming their cement work was shoddy and caused the collapse. BP is suing Haliburton for tons of money but like Roger says, the buck stops at the top, and the top is BP. - 0095ca4c, Sep 13, 2013

Es demasiado mucho esperar para reparar el daño que el sol ha hecho para la piel.

Más mejor

Sería demasiado esperar que se reparara el daño causado en la piel por el sol.

It is too much to expect to repair the damage done to the skin by the sun.

@ sylyon, - Otro buen lío he hecho por mí mismo. Thank you again sylyon , again it was more difficult than I imagined , I never learn to think small . - ray76, Sep 13, 2013
Sí, es verdad. The docs had to take a lot of skin off one arm to save me a few years ago. The sun is nasty stuff, even if a pretty fair source of heat and light and such. - rogspax, Sep 13, 2013

Speaking as a guy who runs a repair shop, far too many people do that Katy, and only make it harder on themselves. Hmmm, I think I´ll have to riff on that for my entry on this one. - rogspax, Sep 13, 2013
Hi Jraider. Sending love back at ya. I lost my Dad last week and I'm finding it pretty tough to get back into the swing of things. - 0095ca4c, Sep 13, 2013

Hello we are twins????? - Jraider, Sep 13, 2013
sylyon, why conjugate romper? There is no change in subject. Can you explain? - gringojrf, Sep 13, 2013
Yes, you are saying that when YOU repair something, YOU also break something else; so : Cuando YO reparo algo, YO rompo algo. I repair, then I also break. It is hard to explain in written form... I hope you understood what I was trying to explain to you. - 00e46f15, Sep 13, 2013
It also depends what you broke trying to repair the other thing. Romper is more like "tear", quebrar is "break", if you broke something that has mechanical parts, then you use "descomponer". - 00e46f15, Sep 13, 2013
Your Spanish sentence translates to English: Usually when I am repairing something break something different. -- You need the "I" after you say "... repairing something I break..." - 00e46f15, Sep 13, 2013
Hi Gringo. Good one. Another way to look at it is that I break something else is a new clause. Plus, it is ¨I break¨, not ¨I to break¨ or ¨I breaking¨. Hth. Saludos. - rogspax, Sep 13, 2013
Thanks sylyon and rogspax. - gringojrf, Sep 13, 2013

Original and wrong

Hay clientes que no se debe permitir intentar reparar cosas. Sólo siguen hacer daño. Lo bueno es que resulta más trabajo para mi taller. Pero de todas formas, lo siento mal por ellos.

Mejor - gracias a Sylyon

There are those clients who shouldn´t be allowed to try to repair things themselves. They just do more damage. The good part is, it results in more work for my shop. But still, I feel bad for them.

Un buen martillo puede reparar la mayoría de las cosas.

El truco es saber dónde usarlo.

el chiste es saber dónde usarlo

A good hammer can repair most things.

The trick is to know where to use it.
