"Señal" is the word to use in that case.
"Señal" could mean that, there is something "hidden" (malignant or benign) behind. "Signo" would not be used in that type of context.
Although they both mean "sign", "signo" usually refers to symbols (signo zodiacal = zodiac sign), while "señal" usually refers to a message, a signal (una señal de los dioses = a sign from the gods).
Actually, this would work too. "Es muestra de"

Yes I'm looking for the word for 'sign', for use in contexts for both good and bad etc. Eg. A clean plate is a sign of a tasty meal - zedoee, Sep 11, 2013
