Unos ejemplos en inglés de "continuous (progressive) past" con "when" y "while."

I was taking a bath when the phone rang. Primer verbo en "continuous past" el segundo en "simple past". Con "when" es como esto generalmente.

We were eating when the announcement came.

People were driving when the tidal wave swept over them.

The children were noisy while the teacher was talking. Primer verbo en "simple past" y el verbo depués "while" en "continuous past".

While you were sleeping, I finished my work.

Puedes decir los dos verbos en "continuous past".

She was watching TV while I was trying to talk to her.

When/While I was sleeping it rained. Is this what you are asking?

An action in the past that was interrupted or ocurred at the same time as something else.
