It doesn´t translate literally very well.

It is probably best translated as once. Once as in ¨from that time on¨ or ¨after¨

Once in the sense of. Once you have begun taking the medicine, you should feel better in two days.

Once you begin, it´s pretty easy to continue.

Once you understand the basics, it´s not problem to move on to the advanced topics.

Note, I was only exposed to this phrase very recently, and don´t claim to know all its uses, but it seems to use the subjunctive in at least some cases.

An example might be.

Once one adjusts, it is easy to continue.

Media vez se ajuste, es fácil seguir.

Note, that is probably not perfect Spanish, but it should give you an idea.

Thanks rogsspax! That's how I thought it should be used. Media vez estudie la leccion, el examen no sera dificil. - LiliMorales, Sep 9, 2013
Well, though I´d have sworn on a bible that I´d seen it used that way, I trust Chilenos post more than my recollection. Sorry if I offered bad info. - rogspax, Sep 9, 2013

Rogs, we don't use "media vez" to mean "once" which means "una vez"

Think in English. "half time"

Now, how would you use that in English. Once you discern that, you will know that in Spanish it is used exactly the same.

;-D
