"Vos" in Costa Rica

Question

Depending on where you are in Costa Rica the pronoun for "you" can be the "usted" form or the "vos" form. The informal "tu" form is rarely ever used. However, most textbooks I have spend very little time with "vos". When to use it, how to conjugate it... any help would be appreciated.

Where in Costa Rica is vos used? I have been here 5 years and have never heard it used. I have only read it is used within families. But none of the families I know use it, I asked about it. - 00551866, Sep 7, 2013

It is used in the province of Guanacaste, specifically in the areas of Liberia and Bagaces. In San Jose most people used the "usted" form. - psole02, Sep 7, 2013

I did hear it in San Jose while staying there. My teacher there also mentioned that they use it often.

From my experience vos is not used, I have only read that it is used within the family. I have spent time with families in several different areas of CR and none of them use it. My wife is Tica and her family only uses the word vos as a salutation. Ella dijo como un chiste familiar.

Instead of knocking sometimes yell vos or the name of someone in the house. Also instead of saying hasta luego or adiós they sometimes only say vos.
