what does the (m) or (f) mean next to defined word, sorry i know this is elementary?

When looking at defined words, and their usage I find (f) or (m) please tell the meaning, I am sure this simple ,but I don't know, i.e. bedroom vs quarto?

It means masculine/ feminine.

Often, Spanish nouns are either masculine (m) or feminine (f). That's what those abbreviations stand for. Hope it helps.
