exagerar ( ex-ah'-heh-rahr )

verb ( to exaggerate )

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game to help with using a new vocabulary word! Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. No exageres, que el perro que te mordió no fue tan grande.

Don't exaggerate; the dog that bit you wasn't that big.

2. Lo despidieron porque había exagerado sus logros académicos en su curriculum.

They fired him because he had exaggerated his academic achievements on his résumé.

Cuando estaba en la universidad yo era muy, muy popular. No exagero. Pero solo en la semana de examenes.

When I was in college, I was very, very popular. I am not exaggerating. But, I was popular only when people needed me to help them prepare for taking the tests.

Debemos ser Seamos honestos. Exageramos cada todos los días, no importa que sea si es algo pequeño (vi, como, quince aves) o algo grande (mi hermano conoce a un actor famoso). Entonces, la proxima vez que te dé cuenta que tu amigo te está exagerando, no se ponges enojado te enojes.

Let's be real. We exaggerate all the time. It doesn't matter if it's something small (I saw, like, 15 birds) or something big (my brother knows someone famous). So the next time you realize that your friend exaggerated something, don't get mad.

enter image description here

There are two things I'm not sure about here. The first is the use of the filler word "like". I don't really know any good Spanish equivalents. The second is whether or not "la proxima vez que" should be followed by the subjunctive.

OK, first with my many errors corrected but visible so others can maybe learn from my folly.

Los corredoressuelen tienden a exagerar sus resultos - los ganadores como así los perdedores.

Cuando uno Si alguien gana, se llama autonombrada el ganador, incluso si hay solo hubo un corredor.

Incluso Ahora cuando que si hay solo dos corredores, el que llega en el segundo lugar, nunca se describe discribiría a si mismo como el perdedor, tampoco o el que llegó en último lugar. Simplemente dice dirá ¨llegó en el segundo lugar¨

And then all cleaned up(ish), courtesy of Sylyon (Thanks)

Racers tend to exaggerate their results, the winners as well as the losers. . If one wins, he calls himself the winner, even if there was only a single racer. . Even if there are only two racers, the one who gets second never describes himself as the loser, or ending up in last place. He simplemente simply says, second position.

Wow, I did even worse than I expected (but I´m glad to have, and thank you for, the corrections just the same) I will fix that in the morning when I´m more awake, and am more likely to learn from it. - rogspax, Sep 1, 2013

Thanks again Sylyon. If this were a way to award best comments, I´d give it to you for this thread for having the patience and grace to correct the many errors I made. I should stick to shorter posts until I´m better. Not fair to the fair corrector. - rogspax, Sep 1, 2013
Hey, Rog, this was a heroic attempt and you did great. We all learn a lot from corrections. You're so wrapped up in the subject you put "simplemente" in the English version. Great job! - Jubilado, Sep 1, 2013
Hola Jubilado. You´re too kind. OMG, I can´t even get the English part 100% right now ;). I actually always write the Spanish first, so that I force my brain to think in Spanish rather than translate. But then my English is messed up. Qué desmadre! - rogspax, Sep 1, 2013
