I found this link interesting. It is a list called the Oxford 3000. They have selected the 3,000 words that they feel are most important to forming a strong vocabulary. The list is for learners of English but I think if you knew these 3,000 words in Spanish it would be a very good base to build on.

Don't forget that there is more than one accent, both in the United States and in the United Kingdom. The accent used on the list for British pronunciation is a "Received Pronunciation" accent, but you will hear completely different accents if you go to Scotland, London, Wales, Yorkshire, Cornwall, Birmingham or Newcastle. Accents change every 30 miles or so in the UK, although generally speaking, younger people have less of an accent than older people.

This list answers the question I had yesterday about how to pronounce the same English words in other parts of the world. I clicked the British sound icon first, then the North American one. Muchas gracias, Gringo. I am pleased.
