Words and "things"
I am not sure what category this suggestion should be in so I put it in Culture and Travel.
This thread
by the old dog Ray resulted in some interesting postings.
This thread is to solicit suggestions from those interested in having a free running "cultural" discussion where we can post our own poems or prose and ideas (and others we think interesting) for comment and appraisal.
All the while of course trying to improve our Spanish and English with the help of the many talented people on SD.
Ray made a suggestion to me that we could take it in turns to "keep an eye" on the thread so that it did not become too onerous a task for one person.
Would this be of interest?

Atxeko that is great , but if poetry is not your bag then we can leave it to those
who excel at it , but you write well, and your English is getting near to being perfect ,
this would be a great opportunity for members to learn the nuances of
spoken English , and the same for us Spanish students , we are all desperate to
understand and articulate Spanish as it is spoken by native speakers.
So come on guys step up to the plate post a comment , even if it is to say this
is a madcap idea , but say it is Spanish and English . A few years ago we had a
chat on skype once a week with an average of 15 members , it was a fantastic
learning exercise , I remember one week I said "sí" another time it was "no" I kid
you not , but gradually we all settled down and started talking in Spanish .
This could be a great test of our ability, and help us to extend the boundaries
that we unknowingly set for ourselves , and we will have a lot of fun as well.

Strine is English as spoke in OZ. This addition by Ian
Are there any suggestions about what we could post in such a thread.
One idea I have is to post a few lines of a poem (one we have written would be nice) - then attempt a translation to Spanish and see who agrees and who has a different opinion.
We could then post the next few lines.
We could do the same with some short prose.
Any suggestions or thoughts anyone?
I am a little disappointed that many more members have shown an interest .
Please Note This thread will be for beginners as much as for those with
more than a passing knowledge of both languages , that is the value and
the beauty of it , because we will all be exposed to the best on offer .
Do not be shy ! We are all children here on a steep learning drive , hop aboard
and sing and dance along with all us kids.

I also think that's a good idea. I'm pretty new in this site so I am aware that my opinion doesn't count much.
Personally, I am not very fond of poetry. Probably beacuse I've never had the chance to approach to it and I've never been exposed at school. Anyway, I am certainly not good at it, not even in Spanish.
So, I cannot offer my poems or prose but I can contribute with my time and my Spanish if it is needed.

This is the first I have seen of this thread. I remember reading something a while back on Ray's post. I thought it would be for people who spoke Spanish well. I am trying to build my vocabulary. I haven't been to college, so I am not sure I could provide any useful input when discussing things like history, Old English literature, famous authors, or artists. I write my own kind of poetry, but I am not familiar with other poets. There are a lot of good people on this site with a solid education. I think a lot of people will enjoy this thread.
I'll rhyme most any time.
Rimaré cualquier momento.
I think this is a great idea and am looking forward to participating. Hopefully, others will respond with interest too. It looks to be another great learning tool. Thanks for posting, Ian.
By the way, the cultural section is the correct place. : )
Those are very kind words Ray, but don't be fooled by my posts and comments. It takes me several minutes to write anything. One tab of the browser with SD, another for WordReference and sometimes another with GoogleTranslator to give me some hints about idioms.
It's been years since I last spoke English. I try to expose myself to the English language as much as I can and I understand almost everything (general context/vocabulary) I read but I have a long road ahead already.
