Phrasal Verbs Challenge - 4 out

10
votes

This challenge is to use the adverb O U T in a phrasal verb.

Phrasal verbs form a major part of the English language.

They really do not exist in Spanish. They cause learners of Spanish and English problems.

Los verbos compuestos forman una parte importante del idioma Inglés.

La verdad es que no existe en español.

Causan problemas los alumnos de español e Inglés.

A phrasal verb (multi-word verb) is a verb + a preposition (usually) that creates a meaning that is different from the original verb.

The problem is that out of context it can be impossible to know what they mean.

El problema es que fuera de contexto puede ser imposible saber lo que significan.

Example:

It's difficult to get a good job if you drop out of high school.

Es difícil conseguir un buen trabajo si abandona o deja la escuela secundaria.

drop out photo: drop out imagesCA4MFEHR.jpg

This is the previous challenge.

We say "abandona" o "deja" la escuela. In fact the technical/political term is "abandono escolar" or "fracaso escolar". - 003492fc, Aug 22, 2013
Gracias amigo :) - ian-hill, Aug 22, 2013
These are so fun, Ian! - Findy, Aug 22, 2013
These Phasal Verb threads are very good. Thanks. - gringojrf, Aug 24, 2013
Yes. But you say 'people are' in English, don't you? We say 'la gente es' in Spanish. - 003492fc, Aug 24, 2013
I confused you amigo - you are correct "people" IS the plural of "person" but we do say "The peopleS of Europe" for example. - ian-hill, Aug 24, 2013
Perfect :) - 003492fc, Aug 24, 2013
We say "peoples" also. - rac1, Aug 26, 2013

to walk out - salir

My pride, my ego, my needs and my selfish ways

Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out of my life

Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made

And it haunts me every time I close my eyes.

Mi orgullo, mi ego, mis necesidades y mi egoísmo

Hicieron que una mujer buena y fuerte como tú saliera de mi vida

Ahora yo no [nunca, nunca] consigo arreglar el desastre que provoqué

Y me atormenta/persigue cada vez que cierro los ojos.

[Review my English please]

to ask out - invitar a salir / to turn out - resultar / to throw out - rechazar / to bail out (informal) - rajarse/echarse para atrás.

The only thing he had to do was to ask her out, but he turned out to be a coward. His fear of being thrown out was so great, that he bailed out.

La única cosa que tenía que hacer era invitarla a salir, pero resultó ser un cobarde. Su temor a ser rechazado era tan grande, que se rajó/echó para atrás.
