Who are VS Who is
¡Hola amigos! Hace algún tiempo que no estaba por aquí. Necesito su ayuda. Estoy trabajando en una web para aprender inglés y me pide traducir del español al inglés lo siguiente:
¿Quiénes están nadando en el mar con él?
El sitio web indica un error si se traduce:
- Who are swimming in the sea with him?
Yo traduje así:
- Who is swimming in the sea with him?
Me pregunto cuál de las dos traducciones es la más correcta. Gracias.

Who is certainly sounds better to me. Questions stated in this form usually are in the singular, unless some other element in the sentence calls out plural explicitly.
Who is swimming. Who is swimming with him. Who are the people swimming in the sea with him.
The above are all valid.
Who are swimming... sounds strange.
If you know that there are more than one person swimming = (¿Quiénes están nadando en el mar con él?) then you should say:
Who are swimming in the sea with him?
If you said
Who is swimming in the sea with him? no one would even notice.
