Why does it need "de" in the phrase like "acerca de" or "cerca de"?
I just learned a new word, "acerca" which means "about" (a preposition). But "acerca de" also means "about"(used as a preposition,too). So what's the function of the word "de" here? I would like to know whether "acerca" or "cerca" must be used with "de"?

Well, think about it this way: in English we say "close to"...this is just the preposition Spanish has "chosen" for distances and such "cerca de", "lejos de", etc.
That's the way Spanish is. It's different and more difficult than English. Did you notice how verbs are conjugated for I, you, he/she/Usted, we, you (plural), and they? By the way, there's no equivalent of Usted in English. Confused? I am! Buenos dias! (which in English, literally, means "goods days" but in Spanish "good morning").
