I enjoy discovering words and phrases that make speech more colorful and fun.

This post is Just for the fun of finding ways to use a phrase, and expand vocabulary

I hope you will try it.

Here is a phrase I think we have all used at one time or another-In some cases serious, some hilarious.

Learners use any resource you wish to make your phrase. Post in English and Spanish

The prase is " Para colmo" in English it is "to top it all" meaning ¨to make matters worse¨

I think you can see the humor or frustration in this phrase.

Here is my example:

'El camino de Tula a Pozarica es pésimo, lleno de baches, parches y topes, y para colmo es una carretera de cuota.

The road from Tula to Pozarica is horrible, full of potholes, patches and speed bumps, and to top it all it is a toll road.

Don't trust the translator on this one. This is coming from Mexican Spanish.

Use it in any way you wish and lets see if we can have some fun with it.This should be a good one !

A vote for all answers and most votes gets best answer.

Enjoy !

As always please advise me if you see typos or other errors.

These are fun...trying to remember them all is going to be another thing. - 0095ca4c, Aug 3, 2013
In the third line, you used "will" twice. "prase" should be phrase. OK, proof-read the whole thing. That's what I do. - Raja-jani, Aug 4, 2013
Oppps - fixed it -thanks ( I think I am the king of typos anyway!!! - pacofinkler, Aug 4, 2013

While we were dancing he trod on my foot and to top it all off, he hit a woman in the mouth with his elbow.

Mientras estábamos baile él pisó el pie izquierdo y para colmo todo, golpeó a una mujer en la boca con el codo.

I want a bowl of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup and to top it off a cherry.

Me gustería un vaso de helado vainilla con jarabe chocolate y para colmo una cereza.

Me gustaría algunos tacos con chiles calientes frescos y para colmo una cerveza fría.

I would like some tacos with hot, fresh chilies and to top it off a cold beer.

No estoy segura de si puedo usar "to make matters worse" en vez de "to top it off" para la frase "para colmo",pero voy a decir "to top it off" aquí. .

El otro día tuve que tomar a mi papá al oftalmólogo, y según de su secretaria, ese día la oficina había recibido nuevas computadoras y ,también, diferentes tipos de equipos para examinar los ojos. No sólo tuvimos que llenar todas las formas otra vez, para colmo tuvimos que esperar más de dos horas para ver al médico.

I am not sure if I can use "to make matters worse" instead of "to top it off" for the phrase"para colmo", but I am going to say "to top it off" here. The other day I had to take my dad to the ophthalmologist , and according to his secretary, that day the office had received new computers and, also, different types of equipment to examine the eyes. Not only did we have to fill out all the forms again, to top it off, we had to wait more than two hours to see the doctor.

Just remove the "pero" before the "para colmo" (there is no need) and it will be perfect! - pacofinkler, Aug 4, 2013
" To make matters worse" is just on target for this phrase in Spanish. - pacofinkler, Aug 4, 2013
Thanks, this answered my question. - rac1, Aug 4, 2013
¡Muchas gracias, Paco! - sanlee, Aug 4, 2013
The English sounds a little funny. Is it right? - - sanlee, Aug 4, 2013
Sanlee, the English sentence sounds fine to me, other than "The other day..." being a run-on sentence. I would add the word "but" before "to top it off" (after the comma) and remove the comma before "we had to wait..." to make it flow more smoothly. - Findy, Aug 4, 2013
I would write: "The other day I had to take my dad to the ophthalmologist. According to his secretary, the office had received new computers that day as well as different types of equipment to examine the eyes. :) - Findy, Aug 4, 2013

La previsión es tormentoso hoy, y para colmo, hace mucho calor.

The forecast is stormy today, and to top it off, it's hot.

And then, to top it all, they left the sinking ship with a bonus.

Y luego, para colmo, dejaron el barco que se hunde con un sobresueldo.

No tener ni donde caerse muerto (to be very poor)

Pobre Juan. Su novia gastó todo su dinero y lo dejó sin tener ni dónde caerse muerto.

Poor Juan. His girlfriend spent all of his money and left him with nothing.

(with not even a pot to piss in) (without even a place to fall down dead.)

¡Gracias pacofinkler!

Creo que lo que quieres decir cuando dices "prestado" es préstamo. Préstamo=loan. Aparte de eso, no veo nada mas que necesitas cambiar. Que cita mas horrible!! Un relato bien gracioso.

enter image description hereAhhhh….ahora caigo.

corrections always welcome
