What does pocresías mean?

This word is used multiple times in the 4th Harry Potter book.---...Los vecinos muggles oyeron explosiones y gritos, y por eso llamaron a esos...¿cómo se llaman...?, <<pocresías>>.

chapter 11Good thinking, chapter 11, 2nd page. The native version would be English (from England). However, the US version refers to "please-men", so I'm sure they were refering to the police. But I didn't know if pocresías was some slang spanish word. - nballen, Aug 2, 2013

It sounds like you got your answer, but if you'd like more Harry Potter practice in Spanish, there are several Flashcard sets here on SD that have to do with Harry Potter and other magical words.

As nballen suggests, I believe it's a deliberate misspelling of "policía" for comic effect, since the Wizards are not familiar with "muggle" institutions like the police. Hence, the "please-men" in the English version.
