Yes they are confusing for English speakers because we only have one verb "to be"
Spanish has two "ser" and estar"
The quick answer is that "ser" is used for characteristics such as "she is tall", "ella es alta". Estar is used for conditions such as "I am tired", "estoy cansado". Chinese also has two forms of "to be", shì and zài. (The marks are tonal, not accent marks.) "Shì' (the 'i' is silent) is similar to the Spanish "ser".
