Translation for "hijo le"

I hear Latinos, particularly Mexicans, exclaim "¡hijo le!" quite frequently. My Mexican husband says it's sort of like "son of a . . .!" to express surprise, as if it's a shortened form of a phrase that could be vulgar. Can anyone confirm or clarify?

Well - It is not slang nor is it really vulgar- However you would not use it carelessly.
The word is ; ¡Híjole! as one word and yes it means "son'of' ---" or "good grief" but the phrase is never finished.

Hijole itself means something darn, shoot, wow, just an expression used to express surprise.
For example:
You see a bad car accident,,,hijole.
Your light is $500...hijole!
