Empezaban a clarearle las entradas entre las canas.

He was beginning to clear the spaces between the white hairs.

I guess, typing it out, that this means that gradually, the coloured hair between the white hairs was turning white, so that the gaps between the white hairs were disappearing?

Thanks for the new verb. I think you are correct. Otherwise it is referring to going bald and I think that would be "volviendo calvo".
