convincente ( kohn-been-sehn'-the )

(adjective) convincing

RafaelNoiret is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game to help with using a new vocabulary word! Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

"chance" is hard to translate, I think I would say: Es más probable que ganes un debate si tus hechos/argumentos sean convincentes para los otros participantes, o: si tus hechos/argumentos les convenzan a los otros participantes. - RafaelNoiret, Jul 28, 2013
Yes, Margherite it's all about chocolate! - rac1, Jul 28, 2013

Al pobrecito Ranito las palabras sabias de su madre no le resultaron nunca convincentes, no creía que pudiera tener la piel impermeable.

For poor Froglet his mother's wise words never carried conviction, he could never believe that his skin really might be waterproof.

The lies of politicians need to be convincing but the more convincing they are the more we need to mistrust them.

Las mentiras de los políticos tienen que ser convincente, pero la más convincente que son los más tenemos que desconfiar ellos.

Corrected to:

Las mentiras de los políticos tienen que ser convincentes, pero lo más convincentes que son, lo más que tenemos que desconfiar de ellos.

Since you are commanding someone to not think something, "no pensar que" does not take the subjunctive in this sentence; if you were to say "You don't think that" (statement) ... instead of "DON'T think that..." (command), it would use the subjunctive - RafaelNoiret, Jul 28, 2013
(continuation) as in: No piensas que vaya a ... - RafaelNoiret, Jul 28, 2013
In this case: No pienses que voy a ... - RafaelNoiret, Jul 28, 2013
Thank you for the clarification. :) - GraceM, Jul 28, 2013
But now I'm confused. I thought I read that after a command, the next verb should be subjunctive. I believe you, of course, Rafael, but I'm wondering why I thought that. You don't have to answer. :) I'm just thinking. - GraceM, Jul 28, 2013
It depends on the situation. If the verb that follows is an action that you want the person to do as well, it goes in the subjunctive, such as "Dile (a ella) que haga (algo)..", can you see the difference? - RafaelNoiret, Jul 28, 2013
Hola Grace. :) - rac1, Jul 28, 2013
Grace, let me know how I can clarify this better for you if you're still confused. It's hard to explain things like that sometimes > - RafaelNoiret, Jul 28, 2013
