You could use " no muy bonito" as a more gentle alternative.

You could try the diminutive, feíto. (Edited for JulianChivi's spelling).

Or in true mexican style exagerate in the opposite direction by saying feisimo with a wink and a smile.

Or he looks a little like Ray76.

Se parece un poco a Ray 76.

bien feito

Adding "bien" (which in this case is the same as "muy") defeats the purpose of the diminutive. As Gringo said feíto would be a common way in Mexico to say feo without any bad intentions. But "un poco feíto" is a softer way to say it.

Well, I bow to your superior knowledge, but it occurs very frequently on Facebook.. - annierats, Jul 23, 2013
I will go with your version as best- I like it and it fits so well - pacofinkler, Jul 23, 2013
Annie, no bowing necessary, ha ha! I´m sure this does happen a lot on facebook but you can´t expect proper language usage on a social-networking site, just as you can´t on texting or a chat-room - 005faa61, Jul 25, 2013

Would it be proper to say "No es muy atractivo" as "not very attractive" or is that too colloquial English?
