lo/la is used for direct object pronouns and le is used for indirect.
The difference between direct and indirect is whether or not the object is the main subject of the sentence.
for example: "Juan le da el abrigo a Martin"
in this case Juan is the main subject and he's following through the action "dar" - to give. Martin receives the action and therefore he is the indirect object, hence we use "le" instead of "lo".
another example: "Compraste el regalo?" "Si, lo compre"
Here, we can see that the main subject is the gift, so we can use direct object pronoun to substitute. In english, "lo" would be translated as "it"
