It is not pronounced as in English. There is no "voiced s" sound in Spanish except a little in the word "mismo". So essentially Z and C are either pronounced like S in Spanish or like TH as chileno says. - Jubilado, Jul 9, 2013

Depending on the region, it is pronounced about the way it is in English.

Zapato - Shoe.
La caza - hunting

Truth is that:

In Spain, most although not all, will pronounce the letter Z as a "TH" in English as in "thin", the the rest will pronounce it like the "C" in "menace"
