Now i knew that Montezuma was many things , but never holy, unless he was the god of tummy upsets , and he was a humorist who gave the Spaniards a local rat and said it was a dog . - ray76, Jul 5, 2013

The legend of the warrior Popocatépetl and his sleeping lover Iztaccíhuatl is very interesting.

Eisenstein's ¡Que viva México! --unfinished but later assembled under that title--is still a brilliant opera by two distinct artists, Eisenstein and Mexico itself. - EugenioCosta, Jul 5, 2013
Cool! I'm going to watch a film version: ) - Ranman, Jul 5, 2013

This volcán is located in a national park so it is not real close to a population center - unless you consider Mexico City a population center - 70 km away. - kirk1, Jul 5, 2013
With 23 million people in the city proper and surrounding areas it is the largest city in the New World. - EugenioCosta, Jul 5, 2013

We have friends living in Puebla who are often affected by this volcano. It's a mouthful to pronounce.

Hopefully, they are all ok. - rac1, Jul 5, 2013
Actually, it´s one of the easier Nahuatl words to pronounce. In Mexico we say "el Popo" but even the full word is easy until the last sylable "tl". Just say the "tl" sound without any vowel sound between consonents. "Iztaccíhuatl" this requires practice - 005faa61, Jul 6, 2013

I have been trolling the world newscasts for stories about the Popocatepetal

Volcano , there are stories going around the world albeit two days old ,

but hidden amongst the newscasts is a storey about the death of five children -

Children killed in Mexico shooting

Five children are among seven people found dead with gunshot wounds in the

Mexican state of Guerrero, a region beset by drug gang violence.

What is this saying about our priorities?

This is a regular occurrence Ray. I'm constantly reading stories about the ruthlessness of the drug gangs in Mexico. I don't think you can ask about 'our' priorities though. These individuals are not even human in my opinion and not on the same level. - 0095ca4c, Jul 6, 2013
Yes, I encountered much the same, Ray. - rac1, Jul 6, 2013
How dreadful , but they do not seam to care. - ray76, Jul 6, 2013

I spent a month in Puebla a few years ago. I was always wiping fine ash off my desk and other surfaces. My landlady told me it was a constant problem due to the volcano.

Thank you, rac, for posting this information.

As of ten minutes ago: US airlines have cancelled dozens of flights into Mexico City over fears that volcanic ash from a rumbling volcano would affect their planes.

Delta and American were among the airlines cancelling more than 40 flights into the capital on Thursday.

Popocatepetl volcano has been rumbling all year, and began spewing ash and steam earlier in the week.

Airport authorities have kept the runway open and say the volcano poses no risk to flights.

"There is a very thin presence of ash, which does not harm operations or affect equipment," an unnamed airport spokesman told AFP news agency.

The airport said US Airways, Delta, United, American and Alaska Airlines cancelled flights as a precaution.

The routes affected by the cancellations were flights to Houston, Dallas, Denver, Phoenix, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Mexican airlines are continuing to fly into the airport as scheduled.

The authorities have established a 7-mile (11km) no-go zone around the volcano, which lies 40 miles south-east of the airport.

It has been spewing ash and a fountain of hot rock since May, and the alert level is currently set one notch below evacuation level.

Several tremors were reported around the volcano on Thursday, but officials said they had no immediate plans to raise the alert level.

Refusing to fly through even a thin layer of volcanic ash is a good idea. This ash has the consistency of crushed glass any can cause catostrafic failure when injested in turbine engines - 005faa61, Jul 5, 2013

Great pic Rac, thanks for posting.

Just got into Dallas (by car) for the weekend´s races. I´ve already seen a few of my Mexican customers, but so far only those from Monterrey, who drive up. Another group from Toluca (near D.F.) are late after some flight delays (but not cancellations). They´ve promised they´ll make it on time for the races, even if not the practice. Hope they arrive with some good pix or stories.
