Por favor, vamos a darle la bienvenida a RafaelNoiret, quien ha ofrecido generosamente su tiempo para ser nuestro corrector oficial de la palabra del día. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game to help with using a new vocabulary word! Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. El Día de la Independencia de los Estados Unidos es el cuatro de julio, y de Venezuela, el cinco.

Independence Day in the United States is July 4th, and in Venezuela, it's July 5th.

2. Mi cumpleaños es en julio.

My birthday is in July.

Honestly, I've never liked the month of July. We don't celebrate any holiday that I like, we're usually on vacation from school, and above all, July is when the bullfighting in Madrid starts on July 7th, and the running with the bulls in Pamplona from July 7th to July 14th. I am a member of a campaign against these activities, since the animals suffer. I am also a vegetarian, so it is understandable why this cause is so important to me. I would not want to even imagine the pain and suffering that the bulls feel. From my point of view, the running with the bulls is based on torture and looking down upon animals.

Being a medical student, I wonder how children are affected, since we are effectively teaching them that there is nothing wrong with animal abuse, violence, and enjoying inflicting pain on a living being. The objective of the campaign that I am a member of is to inform people of the real consequences of the event. In the last few years, the number of bullfighting fans has decreased; however, politicians and economists have stated that they are still in favor of inflicting this anguish.

Hurting the bull is unnecessary and unethical. Retain the event for cultural sake, but eliminate this torture. - nick12345, Jul 5, 2013
We went to a bull fight in Mexico when I was 10 years old. It was brutal !I saw a bull gore a matador, but i was routing for the bull anyway! - Jraider, Jul 5, 2013
I agree Rafael,,,there are studies that show serial killers began as animal torturers when they were little. - 0095ca4c, Jul 5, 2013
How children are afected sounds better, Rafael, unles the bull actually touches them, in which case, theymay suffer from the impact. - annierats, Jul 5, 2013
Thank you, annie. Changed accordingly. - RafaelNoiret, Jul 5, 2013
Animal torturers are probably born as such . - ray76, Jul 6, 2013

Thanks for the review, Rafael, and thanks for the comment, Aranjuez. I must admit, I had to look up how to write "hacer rafting." :) - GraceM, Jul 5, 2013
Me parece muy, muy, divertido. - katydew, Jul 5, 2013
Grace: yes, it's quite funny, no? We don't have a translation for a lot of sporting events: hacer skateboard, hacer windsurf, heheh. - RafaelNoiret, Jul 5, 2013
I too have a look up words and verbs, that's no dis-grace. But you were able to write a perfect phrase. that alone is an achievement! - Aranjuez12, Jul 6, 2013

séptimo instead of siete is my only correction. I would put a comma before Y instead of a period and not start the sentence with Y, but this isn't wrong. - RafaelNoiret, Jul 5, 2013

Ayer por la tarde me dije en el espejo: Este julio parece que he olvidado todas las reglas de la gramática española. (Si) yo que me iría y disfrutaría del sol.

Yesterday in the afternoon I told myself in the mirror: this july it seems that you have forgotten all the Spanish grammar rules. If I were you I'd leave and I'd enjoy the sun.

Remember that, in conditional sentences, one clause takes the imperfect subjunctive and the other takes the conditional. You can remember which one takes the subjunctive because it's always the one that implies the "If...." - RafaelNoiret, Jul 5, 2013
Unas correcciones: Parece que he olvidado [...] de LA gramática [...] It sounds a bit better to just say "Yo que tú" or "Yo de ti" without the "Si", but it isn't wrong. "me iría" instead of fuera, and "disfrutaría DEL sol. - RafaelNoiret, Jul 5, 2013

Ñam ñam (this is how we write yum yum in Spanish, haha). Just some corrections for you: Mis mangos empiezan a madurar en julio. (we don't capitalize months in Spanish). Están completamente maduros cuando se ablandan. Ablandarse means to become soft. - RafaelNoiret, Jul 5, 2013
(continuation 1) We use the verb estar in this case with maduros. (plural, because mangos is plural) - RafaelNoiret, Jul 5, 2013
