Lo que pasa es que...

Forgive me if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it in the phrasebook or when I searched the forums. The literal translation of "Lo que pasa es que" from the translator is "what happens is that" ...which sort of makes sense but I don't think we would say it this way in English.

I heard this phrase on a podcast. They said it's something you can say to buy time when you are speaking during a conversation. The best thing I could find online was "The thing is..." but I'm not sure if that's correct either.

How would you translate this phrase?

Lo que pasa es que can be translated as:

  • What happens is that... (your choice)
  • It all boils down to...
  • The truth of the matter is...
  • What is going on is that...

I hope this helps!

Gracias. "The bottomline line is that...", "The crux of it is that...", "What it comes down to is that..."? - EugenioCosta, Jun 25, 2013
Excellent, as usual, Eugenio! - francobollo, Jun 25, 2013
