Why is there a "de" in the sentence?

I read a sentence, "Mi perro siempre come de mi comida." But I don't know why there is a "de" in front of "mi comida." Can't we just say "Mi perro siempre come mi comida?"

"Mi perro siempre come mi comida"
My dog always eats (all) my food. (And leaves nothing for me)
"Mi perro siempre come de mi comida."
My dog always eats from (some of) my food. (I share my food with my dog)
