Expressions using "El alma (caerse) a los pies" - The heart sinks.

Question

Here's an interesting phrase: Al descubrir los resultados el alma se me cayó a los pies. Upon finding out the results, my heart sank.

Try a phrase yourselves using the verb caerse in this expression and various hearts (my, his, her, their, our) sinking.

Sorry I'm a little confused, I know alma means soul, so in English do you use heart to express sentences like this?

Yes, Anormal, we use "heart" and you have expanded the expression from "a los pies" to "en pedazos". This expressions uses a pronomial verb in the 3rd person singular to say the idea of "it" happening to me or anyone. A usage unfamiliar to Anglophones. - Jubilado, Jun 3, 2013
