era or fue ??

I just started watching the movie "abre los ojos", and there's something i was just thinking i'm not really sure of.
The guy tells his friend about the girl he came to the party with: (how did they met) "intentaba a robarme el libro"
and she answers: "el libro era mio"
Why did she use "era" here ? Does it also make sense to use "el libro fue mio" ?
I know that's the difference between the Imperfect and the Preterite tenses, i guess it's a bit subtle for me, and I find myself lot's of times not sure which one to use.

In this case is saying:
The book was mine (and still is), compared to fue:
The book used to be mine (not anymore).
Would that help?

As a side note. Could one use "fue mio" in a sentence like "I liked his car, so he gave it to me, and then it was mine." - ATuring, Jun 1, 2013
