I'm afraid there's not really an English equivalent to 'lluvia de sobres' - the literal translation would be 'shower of envelopes'. Bear in mind that it may be a regional thing but asking for cash at a party may be considered rude in some cultures.

How interesting, Kiwi, I've never heard the expression. Maybe it's like baby-showers which they have in the US? - annierats, May 27, 2013
Which seem very odd to us, how can you start giving gifts before the baby is safely born? - annierats, May 27, 2013

I don´t how to say lluvia de sobres in English either, but it´s very common in various cultures. It is not for "baby showers" but for weddings (bodas).

A lo mejor se podría decir "monetary gifts."

Puede ser: a babys-shower, si es una fiesta para pedir dinero para ropa del bebe antes del parto. En Europa no celebramos estas fiestas pero es normal traer regalos a una fiesta de boda.

I think it may be ababy shower. These are not to wash babies, but rather, to beg money for clothing, or to receive presents for the unborn baby. It seems a little hasty and it's not common to clebrate baby-showers in Europe. Wedding presents is another matter...
