brevemente (breh-veh-mehn’-te)

(adverb) briefly

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

** 1. Se imaginó, brevemente, que no tendría que ir a la reunión y dar su presentación. Pero pronto volvió a la realidad.**

  • He imagined, briefly, that he wouldn't have to go to the reunion and give his presentation. But he soon came back to reality.*

** 2. Eduardo se calmó brevemente, antes de explotar en rabia y maldecir a su padre biológico. Entonces ahí el policía le dijo a Enrique que Eduardo le echó veneno al café matutino de su padre.**

  • Eduardo calmed down briefly before exploding in rage, cursing his biological father. It was then that the cop told Enrique that Eduardo had poisoned his father's morning coffee.*

Its back! The 2nd example sentence is part of our Word of the Day "novela" series. Stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Thanks to everyone that has been helping to correct in the palabra del día. I know it is a time-consuming job and we all are very appreciative of your work and dedication to us and to SD!!

Sólo se detuvieron brevemente en la carretera para ver el tornado que se acercaba. Luego salieron disparados como una bala para que no los alcanzara y estuvieran a salvo.

They only stopped briefly on the road to see the approaching tornado. Then they got out of there like a bat out of hell to go to a safe place.

"salieron disparados como una bala" / "like a bat out of hell", yes--nice apposition of figures. English also has "as if shot out of a gun". And if you want something countryish, say--"they skedaddled out of there as if shot out of a cannon". - EugenioCosta, May 27, 2013
"skedaddle" = "retreat or leave hastily". "The skedaddled"--they got out of there quickly, "in a flash". - EugenioCosta, May 27, 2013
corr: "they skedaddled" - EugenioCosta, May 27, 2013
Also: "they got out of there faster than a speeding bullet", popularized by the Superman Comic. - EugenioCosta, May 27, 2013

Brevemente pensé que iba a hacer un viaje corto en mi moto, pero no pude por causa de mal tiempo.

I briefly thought that I was going to take a short ride on my bike, but I couldn't because of bad weather.

If only he did not speak so much and said it briefly.

Ojalá que él no hablase tanto pero lo dijera brevemente.

Correct: Ojalá y no hablara tanto y lo que dijera lo hiciera brevemente.

Note also the "silly", a word which has changed meaning over the centuries from "blessed" to "pious" to "innocent" to "pitiable" to "feeble-minded", doubtless at least partly to the above, and paralleling the British "Empire". - EugenioCosta, May 28, 2013

Para decirlo en la forma más breve posible, al abogado se le quedó el informe en el maletín

To put it as briefly as possible, the lawyer left the brief in his briefcase.

After Gracián, whatever is good is, if brief, twice as good, so let's talk briefly.
