Lot´s of good answers there. I think English speakers, as folks who don´t really have any diacritical marks, tend to think of them as merel decorative. But they´re much more than that.

Some, such as ü, and the much more common ñ, should be thought of as completely different letters, and NOT, as a U with a couple dots, or an N with a fetching hat. We´d be better off if there were a totally unrelated different character whose pronunciation we had to learn anew. And we´d do well to treat them as such.

As for the á é í ó, they will at least denote-change the pronunciation via the syllable emphasis. In many cases, especially with verbs and pronouns, the meaning.

tu is yours tú is you

el is the él is he

si is if sí is yes

cómo is how como is I eat comó is she ate

etc etc.

I would go on, but I don´t have that much attention spa....

wink R

Look at this page under pronunciation for quite a few tips and rules

"an N with a fetching hat." Superb! Your profile doesn't say you are a teacher but here you really are! - Jubilado, May 24, 2013
You´re too kind Jubilado. I´m not a real teacher, but I´ve taught English, German, Alegeba, and Chemistry, but basic programming, and MANY suspension seminars, ages 4 thru 60 (not any single field covered that age range, of course ) - rogspax, May 24, 2013
Now I feel intimidated commenting.. but apparently not too intimidated, hey? - katydew, May 25, 2013

Jhoto, welcome! Like everyone says, you need to use them all the time and alot!! The best way to learn how to do this is take Spanish lessons, like the ones offered here (for free!) on SD. enter image description here

Also, it is very important for you to fill in your profile so we can tell your native language and learning language proficiency, location and even simpler - whether you are a male or female. That way you are either an amigo or an amiga!! Have fun learning!

They are part of spelling for example 4 different words que, qué, como y cómo. They also change how you to pronounce the word. que, quÉ, como y cÓmo

Think outside of the English language box. These are like additional letters in the Spanish alphabet, so when the spelling includes one of these marks, you will need to use that letter. If you don't, it could change the whole meaning of the word.

If you are asking for a word list, I can't help you. But if your just asking when, like Ian said, you will use them quite a bit. They may be pesky little things but they are very important, sometimes even to the meaning of the word. :D

Hope this helps!

You ALWAYS have to use it, when never you meet it. When it is " qué", you have to write qué, you can not ask WHY or WHEN, because it is Spanish, When you learn Spanish, you have to do as Spanish do, that all.
