cansar (kahn-‘sahr)

(verb) to tire, to annoy

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

** 1. Mi clase semanal de Zumba me cansa mucho más que los otros ejercicios que hago.**

  • My weekly Zumba class tires me out much more than the other exercises I do.*

** 2. Estaba cansado pero no podía esperar un segundo más. Enrique tocó en la puerta y le abrió un policía. De pronto, lo esposaron sin decirle una palabra.**

  • He was tired but he couldn't wait a second more. Enrique knocked on the door and a cop opened the door. Suddenly, he was handcuffed without a word.*

Its back! The 2nd example sentence is part of our Word of the Day "novela" series. Stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Thanks to everyone that has been helping to correct in the palabra del día. I know it is a time-consuming job and we all are very appreciative of your work and dedication to us and to SD!!

Debido a sus juventudes y vigores, los gatitos se hicieron hacían muy cansados ??y encontraron el lugar perfecto para descansar, ¡en la planta en maceta!

Because of their youth and vigor, the kittens became very tired and found the perfect resting spot, inthe potted plant!

Research: -- Hacerse and llegar a ser are followed by a noun or adjective and indicate a change brought about by effort.

Here's my take: Debido a su juventud y vigor, los gatitos se hicieron cansados ... en la planta en maceta. - sinmeta, May 23, 2013
I like the research quote! Posts with some background, be it pix or stories or grammar, always seem to stick better. Thanks!ç - rogspax, May 23, 2013
los gatitos se pusieron muy cansados or los gatitos se cansaron mucho - francobollo, May 23, 2013

Estas carreras de resistencia me cansan mucho. Quizás tengo que entrenarme más y mejor.

These endurance races really tire me out. Maybe I need to train myself more, and better.

Endurance Racing - Carrera de Resistencia

LeMans Start

Though unusual, the most famous endurance race, ¨The 24 hours of LeMans¨, starts with the riders running across the track to their motorcycles for the start. Now, any start of this type is called a LeMans Start.

Aunque se considera insólito, la carrera de resistencia más conocido, ¨Las 24 horas de LeMans¨ se inicia por los pilotos cruzando la pista para montar las motos y luego poniéndose en marche real. Hoy día, es común llamar todo de estes tipos de comienzos ¨Le Mans Start¨

(what word do I really want for start please? Inicio, Comienzo, Empiezo ???)

I never knew how to say endurance before. Thanks Rog! - sinmeta, May 23, 2013
I sought that out a long time before finding a satisfactory answer too, but then picked this term up organically from a bunch of Mexican and 1 each Colombian and Venezuelan racer, so I figured it was validated and safe to use. I still need ¨Le Mans Start¨ - rogspax, May 23, 2013
Estas carreras... - francobollo, May 23, 2013
Gracias. - rogspax, May 23, 2013
Your sentence are always daring. - katydew, May 23, 2013
Thanks, I use these to push myself a bit. And then, apparently, when concentrating on new things, botch simple stuff like estes vs estas, proving it´s not ingrained right yet. I need a better brain. - rogspax, May 23, 2013
Thanks rogspax. I couldn't think of anything to say until I read your sentence. I hope you don't mind me carrying on the 'racing' theme :-) - 0095ca4c, May 23, 2013
Not at all ma´am! Can there ever be enough racing references? (actually, all my non-racing friends would say, YeS!) - rogspax, May 23, 2013
My comment has a typo - sentenceS. - katydew, May 23, 2013

Cansar es una enfermedad tremenda, pero nuevos tratamientos están descubierto cada año.

Hi pam! lol...yes, I do eat tofurkey but just at Xmas because I don't really like it. My mother thinks I am eating some sort of 'special' turkey. She wouldn't really understand why I don't eat anything with legs. - 0095ca4c, May 23, 2013
Ah! Al those poor little tofus! :)) - Noetol, May 23, 2013

Esta imbécil cansó a su caballo hasta el límite porque no dedicó suficiente tiempo a entrenarse para la carrera extenuante.

This idiot has tired his horse to the point of exhaustion because he did not spend enough time training for the grueling race.

Lo siento, he tenido un día muy ocupado y por eso estoy desmasiado cansada para escribir algo interesante. Estoy hecho polvo.

I'm really sorry but I've had a busy day and because of this, I'm too tired to write anything interesting. I'm knackered.
