How long has it taken you to learn Spanish?
I'm curious to how long it would take the average person as I am learning.

I've heard people say they've been studying Spanish for 10+ years and they can't speak worth a crap. I've met people who've only studied for two years and speak very well.
It really all depends on several things, like the level of fluency you want, how much time you dedicate to it, and most importantly, how much time you spend actually speaking it. An average time is hard to gauge, because the level of effort you put into it, learning method and dedication simply can't be measured consistently.
But, even after saying the above, I would say if you can dedicate at least 3-4 hours a week, choose an effective study method and spend as much time as possible actually speaking, listening, reading and writing the language, in two years you should be communicating pretty well.
And of course the more time you devote to learning, and again actually (especially) speaking the language, the faster you progress.
And did I say you need to spend as much time as possible speaking the language? I can't emphasis that enough. That more than anything has the biggest impact on how fast you learn.
Hey,
I recomend that you take the course finish them in a month or two, then fly down to mexico city or puebla for a few weeks, and you will see by the time you get back you will be fluent. just keep up with it, read books in spanish, watch movies in spanish and best of all find a pen-pal or a friend who can speak it and converse often!
Good luck to ya
Rodney is right, which is way I glad you phrased the question the way did. I would say I learned in 3 years having previous knowledge and a lot of time to pratice. Also get native speakers, they will help recongize your mistakes a lot quicker. As an article I read fluency depends on your goals.
With a good memory and devotion to learning you can do it. Spanish in a week! Let us know in Spanish how much you learned in a week. I hope you do it.
How long did it take you to learn English?
I have been learning for about 4 years without classes. But this is living Spanish every day. When you no longer need English to learn Spanish (translating) you can call yourself fluent even if your not perfect.
Being immersed will make it go much, much faster because you have to use the language as soon as you learn the word 'hola'.
I began totally from scratch, not even knowing the word 'hola' in the beginning of 2010. I live in a Spanish speaking country, but work in English so it seems slower going for me. But I have to do everything else in Spanish so it helps.
cuando lo aprenda te diré
when I learn it I will tell you
Well I need to learn it in less than a week. I've heard of people who've done it, and it definitely is possible. Spanish is generally an easy language to learn as it is similar to English in many ways; it just requires dedication.
