Tirar de las orejas

Tirar de las orejas

I am looking at birthday traditions in other countries and one phrase I ran across was "En España y Argentina es costumbre tirar de las orejas del "afortunado", una vez por cada año que cumple."

I know that it says "In Spain and Argentina it is customary to [tirar de las orejas del "afortunado"] once for each year they are old", I just cannot figure our the middle part.

Any thoughts?

To pull the lucky boy/girl ears.

The lucky boy/girl refers to the birthday boy/girl.
