En estas cuatro grandes vasijas doradas de bronce se guardaban/ guardaba agua para proteger al palacio de los incendios.
guardaban o guardaba? Which is correct? I think it's the first. Am I right?

Se guardaban is correct in the case because "cuatro grandes vasijas" is plural so you use the 3rd person plural tense.
