One question about word placement

Hi guys! If I were to say "We were conserving it", would it be, "Lo estabamos conservando" or "Estabamos lo conservando"? This is for a crossword but apparently it does fit with the latter translation, but the first translation sounds weird to me. Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

You can place the direct object pronoun before the verb or attach it to the end of the gerund.
Lo estábamos conservando o Estábamos conservándolo.

Lo estabamos conservando or Estabamos conservandolo.
