"de" + price (is "de" gramatically necessary?)

Sentence from Rosetta Stone: "El precio de la ensalada fue de seis euros."
Is it grammatically correct to leave out (the bolded) "de" and just write: "El precio de la ensalada fue seis euros." ?
According to the computer translators, taking out "de" is fine. But, computer translators are unreliable and I´d like human input.

El precio fue 6 euros is not correct.
The construction: Noun + Ser + de === means XXX is the equivalent of (number) in English
La altura del salón es de 6 metros. The room's height is the equivalent of 6 meters.
La duración del curso en línea es de 4 meses. The duration of this online course is the equivalent of 4 months.
As you can see, the construction is parallel, even in the use of the preposition of (de).
