How to say "you look great"
A woman wears a new dress for the first time her husband says "wow you look great" Te ves estupenda, does not seem to quite work somehow, Is it OK to say it like that? Its as if the verb is being used backwards!

Sure that works or you could say .... Te ves muy bien, ¡estás guapísimo! ¡Estás preciosa!

It works just fine. What makes you think it doesn't?
If you want some more options:
Ese vestido te queda muy, muy bien
Te ves increíble/hermosa/guapa
Te ves hermosisima (this will get you major props)
Que guapa!
¡Te ves mas bella que nunca!
¡Que sexi te ves!
That seems to translate OK but I just do not know. You could say something like "Ese vestido es muy bueno y eres muy bonita."

I can see where you might think that, but if you think about it a moment longer, you´ll notice that it is very much like what we do in English too.
You can look at a book. You can look at another person. That ¨you¨ is doing the looking (at some other object -- meaning the normal way)
But when we say ¨You look good¨, That person is looking good To us, not them looking At something, so we essentially do a roll reversal on the subject-object as well, just a bit differently.
