competir (kohm-peh-teer’)

*(verb) to compete *

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

** 1. El nadador estaba compitiendo para ver quién sería el primero en cruzar el Canal de la Mancha.**

  • The swimmer was competing to see who would be the first to cross the English Channel.*

** 2. Pablo estaba compitiendo en la maratón para recaudar fondos para entidades benéficas.**

  • Pablo was competing in the marathon to raise money for charity.*

Thanks to everyone that has been helping to correct in the palabra del día. I know it is a time-consuming job and we all are very appreciative of your work and dedication to us and to SD!!

Wishing you well wherever you are Rac1! -Martha-

I would like to compete in the local Salsa Congress, but I haven't danced in many years and everyone is dancing on two. Me gusta a competir en el Congreso bailar salsa, pero no bailo en muchos años y todo el mundo estan bailando en dos. enter image description here

Good one mate! - pmikan-pam, Apr 24, 2013
shouldn't you need to use the imperfect subjunctive temiera? normally Quizá + subj. - Aranjuez12, Apr 24, 2013
I found this about quizá + subjunctive: http://www.spanishdict.com/answers/155429/quizas-quiz-subjunctive-/oldest - bandit51jd, Apr 24, 2013
More infor about the subjunctive here, too! http://users.ipfw.edu/jehle/courses/persuad1.htm - bandit51jd, Apr 24, 2013
so in this case their is just little doubt, therefore no subjunctive I guess. Sorry for the inconvenience.. Thanks Bandita. - Aranjuez12, Apr 24, 2013
No no no ! this is fantastic , this is the way we are all learning , gracias a todos , I shall now check this all out , if I have the time , " Now that was subjunctive" .¿ Sí ? - ray76, Apr 25, 2013
But I figured that in my sentence there was doubt , but not necessarily so, therefore it was not subject to anything. - ray76, Apr 25, 2013
thinking. - Aranjuez12, Apr 25, 2013
Dear Ray, but I do think you were quite right to chose the imperfect indicative. The fact is that I completely forgot about that quizá-rule. I must say I had seen it before. But maybe I simply forgot (same type phrase by the way). Thanks for the positive - Aranjuez12, Apr 25, 2013

I am proud of my best friend who was eligible to compete in the Olympic diving but couldn't because of an injury. Estoy orgullosa de mi mejor amigo que era elegible para competir en el buceo olímpico, pero no pudo por las heridas.

Competing in any type of activity is very stressful, but can be highly rewarding as well.

El competir en cualquier tipo de actividad es muy estresante, pero puede ser muy gratificante, también.

Lo importante es competir en buena lid y salir victoriosos. Pero con la competencia nada más basta.

What really matters is to compete regardless of the results. If one wins, well that's the icing on the cake.

Unos padres y maestros piensan que es mejor para los niños jugar al juegos non-competitivos, pero es casi imposible impedirlos competir en unos modos. Se parece natural. La competición puede causar problems, pero también se puede aprender mucho cerca la vida.

I used to compete in cross country events but now I hate running distances.

Solía competir en eventos de carreras de larga distancia, pero ahora no me gusta correr distancias.
